PROSTHETIC & ORTHOTIC TECHNOLOGY

The field of orthotics and prosthetics continues to see technological advances to provide more comfort and function for the end user.  At Vogue we strive to give you the most advanced technology that appropriately fits your abilities and functional needs.   Included below are some examples of advanced technology helping patients achieve their full potential.

C-LEG

Lisa walking with C-LEG and dogMicroprocessor controlled knee for the Transfemoral amputee from Otto Bock
The latest generation of C-Leg adds:
• Improved swing phase control.  Users experience easier initiation at swing, with a smoother, more natural movement.
• Higher weight limit: 300 lbs.1 Benefiting even more users, including those who weigh more or who routinely carry or lift heavy loads. Genium™ and C-Leg are rated for the highest weight limits in the category.
• Improved stumble recovery. Increased resistance in case of a trip or stumble.
• A third mode. Another choice, personalized for the user.
• Adjustable safety mode. The default setting can be adjusted, personalized to the user’s preference.
• Improved protection. New silicone caps covering the charging and adjustment jacks are now attached to the knee, securing the caps and improving protection from foreign matter and moisture.

I-LIMB HAND

The i-limb ultra prosthetic hand from Touch Bionics is designed for those who want more from their prosthesis. With the i-limb ultra, your prosthesis looks and moves more like a natural hand. Each finger moves independently and bends at the natural joints so that it can accurately adapt to fit around the shape of the object you want to grasp. Powered by Touch Bionics' unique biosim software, the i-limb ultra is so versatile it provides you with the ability to customize the hand for your daily needs.

Choose from a wide selection of automated grips and gestures to help you complete your daily tasks, such as index point for typing, precision pinch mode for gripping small objects or natural hand position for walking or while at rest.
Utilizing its pulsing and vari-grip features, the i-limb ultra is able to gradually increase the strength of its grip on an object. This can be very useful in situations where a firmer grasp is required, such as tying shoelaces tightly or holding a heavy bag more securely.

GENIUM BIONIC KNEE

This state-of-the-art microprocessor-controlled knee joint utilizes a complex sensory system and sophisticated rule sets to mimic natural gait more closely than any other prosthetic knee. With multiple environmental inputs (including a gyroscope and an accelerometer), the Genium delivers unmatched functionality, including special features to help step over obstacles and ascend stairs.

The unique Genium technology is not a next-generation C-Leg, but is a sophisticated new technology platform built to gather exponentially greater microprocessor inputs that result in very precise responses.

For the wearer, motion becomes intuitive. Barriers and obstacles become an unconscious part of life instead of an interruption. Whether making a fast turn-and-grab to catch up with a runaway toddler, changing speed dramatically or backing up to navigate a crowd, or simply stepping over an obstacle instead of going around, the Genium makes it all easier without risking stability.

BeBionic

BeBionic Hand with index point Bebionic3 utilises leading-edge technology and unique, ergonomic features that make it unlike any other hand available. These innovations combine to give the hand versatility, functionality and performance.  Some of the many features include:

  • Individual Motors in each finger allow you to move the hand and grip in a natural, coordinated way. The motors are positioned to optimise weight distribution – making the hand feel lighter and more comfortable.
  • Powerful microprocessors continuously monitor the position of each finger, giving you precise, reliable control over hand movements.
  • 14 Selectable grip patterns and hand positions enable you to perform a huge number of everyday activities with ease.
  • Proportional Speed Control gives you precision control over delicate tasks, so you can pick up an egg or hold a polystyrene cup as easily as crushing an empty can.

HARMONY VACUUM CONTROLLED SOCKET

The Harmony Vacuum System socket and suspension method developed by Carl Casper
Improving the fit of your prosthesis can give you greater freedom through more confidence and improved limb health.

The innovative Harmony pumps pull air out of your socket for a secure, intimate fit from the time you put your prosthesis on in the morning until you’re ready to take it off at night. When your prosthesis is securely in place, you have a better sense of where your leg is in space (proprioception), allowing you more freedom to move without wondering if your leg will slip or slide.

The Harmony System can even relieve problems with fluctuating limb volume. Some studies show that the Harmony System improves circulation, thereby helping to maintain the size of your residual limb throughout the day. This relieves you of the burden to add socks to maintain socket fit.

Another problem that can arise from poor fit is pain from having your limb rubbing against the inside of your socket. If your limb size remains constant, it won’t slip, slide or rub against your socket, which can result in painful sores.

HELIX3D HIP JOINT SYSTEM

3D Hip Movement for a Natural Gait from Otto Bock
·  Produces 3-dimentional hip movement to compensate for pelvic rotation and promotes a symmetrical and natural gait pattern.
·  Allows for leg length reduction during the swing phase. This helps reduce the risk of falling and increases security.
·  Improves sitting posture and reduces pelvic obliquity to a minimum.
·  The 7E10’s large flexion angle makes it easier to accomplish activities of daily living, such as putting on shoes or getting into a car
up to 220 lbs/100 kg  weight.

MICHELANGELO HAND

With the Axon-Bus® System and the Michelangelo® Hand, Ottobock has developed an entirely new technology for transradial fittings that sets the standard with extraordinary functionality and a highly natural design.

Thanks to four movable fingers and a thumb that can be separately positioned, the Michelangelo® Hand offers innovative, never-before-seen gripping kinematics. In order to achieve a natural movement pattern, the hand is equipped with two drive units. The main drive is responsible for the gripping movement and strength, while the thumb drive offers a total of seven different hand positions thanks to Opposition Mode and Lateral Mode. Actively driven elements are the thumb, index finger and middle finger while the ring finger and little finger passively follow the movements. The AxonWrist mechanical wrist joint permits pronation and supination as well as flexion and extension – the latter in a freely selectable mode for the first time.

RHEO KNEE

The RHEO KNEE from Össur is a microprocessor-controlled, prosthetic knee system that automatically adapts to an individual's walking style and environment.

The newly redesigned RHEO KNEE is an advanced prosthetic device that liberates its users to focus on their chosen activity, instead of having to think about how they are walking.

New developments in Össur's proven bionic technology mean that the RHEO KNEE can recognize and respond even better to the most subtle changes in walking speed and terrain. Using sophisticated artificial intelligence, it continuously learns and adapts to an amputee's walking style and environment.

As a result, it restores people's ability to walk naturally, comfortably and confidently at any speed.

TRITON FOOT

Like the Trias®, the Triton from Otto Bock also offers an interactive system of three spring elements, which largely control the function of the foot: carbon forefoot spring, two-part carbon heel spring and a base spring made of high-performance polymer material.

At heel strike the springs of the Triton are strong enough to effectively dampen the impact of the load. The moderate shortening of the heel lever supports the user, allowing them greater control and safety when bending their knee. How the foot behaves in this phase of walking can be adapted to suit the individual user with the supplied heel wedges.

The benefits of the Triton's interlinked spring system are particularly evident during roll-over. The forefoot and the heel are connected by a base spring to form a complete system. The majority of energy stored during heel strike is gradually released in the course of the stance phase. This makes easy roll-over possible for the patient.

When the user is standing, the Triton's reaction to their body weight being shifted from one foot to the other is largely neutral. This special feature of the Triton means that the user is relaxed and stable when standing.

PROPRIO FOOT

Proprio Foot from Ossur, is the newest product available from their Bionic Technology Division. The foot responds to inclines, declines and changing terrain, allowing a more fluid controlled gait. Stairs are also  easier to negotiate since the foot can be placed fully on each step. Sitting with the foot flat on the ground is another advantage. Heel heights can be changed easily without affecting the alignment of the prosthesis.

This foot is appropriate for K3 ambulators weighing between 100 to 250 lbs.

BIONICARE KNEE SYSTEM

Helping people with knee Osteoarthritis live active lives

If you are finding traditional treatments for osteoarthritis of the knee ineffective or undesirable, talk with your doctor about the BioniCare Knee System. This unique electrical stimulation treatment is the first such non-drug, non-invasive option for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Many patients find that drugs and injections aren’t bringing the relief they need and they aren’t ready or medically able to have knee replacement surgery. If you are among this group, the BioniCare Knee System offers another option. It is the first and only patented proprietary signal and system demonstrated to be effective and safe in multiple clinical studies. More than 4,000 physicians have prescribed this unique treatment for more than 40,000 patients.

DYNAMIC ARM

A new generation of elbow joints has arrived with flexion controlled by an electric motor in combination with a unique vario drive. The DynamicArm 12K100 from Otto Bock allows for quick, exact positioning of the hand with minimal energy expenditure and incorporates an innovative, high-performance drive with stepless gears that can lift loads up to 6 kg (13 lbs). The elbow also has a static holding capacity of 50 lbs (22 kg), and will slip if the weight limit is exceeded—without damaging the elbow.

Extremely fast signal transmission using the AXON-BUS® system, along with newly developed signal processing allow for more physiological movement. Thanks to Otto Bock’s DMC control concept, strength and speed can be controlled with natural ease. The integrated AFB (Automatic Forearm Balance) stores the energy released when the arm is lowered and helps lift it during flexion, allowing the arm to swing quietly and naturally while walking. Lithium Ion battery delivers reliable, high performance.  All Otto Bock quick disconnect terminal devices are compatible with the DynamicArm. The DynamicArm also incorporates Bluetooth technology for programming and training without cords or cables.

STANCE KNEE/ANKLE FOOT

Stance Control Orthoses differ from Conventional KAFOs in that they allow for knee flexion during the swing phase and locking during stance phase.

Why Stance Control?
A traditional KAFO can lock the knee in full extension, which provides stability but also causes patients to ambulate with a gait deviation that can lead to overuse injuries due to compensatory measures taken by the patient to ambulate.  This in turn requires more energy to get from point A to point B.

A stance control orthosis (SCO) allows the knee to bend during the swing phase of the gait cycle and blocks knee flexion for stability during the stance phase. By allowing the knee to bend during swing phase, SCOs allow a more normal gait, which may reduce secondary complications from gait compensations, and allow the patient to walk with less effort.
Benefits of SCOs over Conventional KAFOs:

·  Decreased gait anomalies during swing phase
·  Vaulting
·  Hip hiking
·  Circumduction
·  Decreased pulmonary/cardiac stress
·  Esthetic gait pattern
